The idea of an entity representing the personification of evil in all its aspects and combining the functions of master of the underworld, Hell, destroyer of the cosmos and responsible for the worst aspects of humanity seems to have appeared with monotheism. The development of this original figure perhaps borrows from the polytheistic religions practiced in the Middle East.
